NEWS FROM THE MADISON BIRTH CENTER
October 10, 2005
Julia is here and Hannah is back!
We are so pleased to welcome Julia Vance to our midwifery team! She was oriented quickly with the flurry of births we had in September. Things have quieted down since then, and she’s getting a chance to settle in before we get busy again in November and December. We’re still in the process of updating our staff bios and photos (more are coming), but check out Julia’s bio by following this link: www.madisonbirthcenter.com/about_staff.asp.
Hannah is back from maternity leave, and we’re so happy to see her and her sweet baby Silas every week. She’s seeing clients on Tuesday mornings, taking call one weekend each month and teaching childbirth classes. Check out her new photo at the link above.
Annual Reunion Picnic a Success
The Reunion Picnic was a wonderful opportunity for Madison Birth Center families to gather to enjoy each other’s company, an abundance of wonderful food and great weather in August. Jennifer Hassrick, a professional photographer specializing in maternity and family photography, took some incredible photos. To see some of them, click here. If you see a photo of yourself you’d like to have, please contact the birth center.
Mother’s Milk Depot Begins Accepting Donations
A small group of dedicated volunteer professionals and consumers has worked hard to establish a local breast milk depot, so that women who need to supplement may do so with mother’s milk. The depot is now collecting milk for shipment to the Ohio Milk Bank, where it will be tested and processed. It will then be returned to Wisconsin, where it will be dispensed to families in need of milk. There are currently two depots in Wisconsin, one in Mount Horeb at the UW Clinic, where Dr. Anne Eglash works, and one in Oshkosh. Dr. Anne Eglash is an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Family Physician and Madison Birth Center Advisory Board Member.
If you’re interested in donating milk to the Depot, please call
608/333-4955 and leave a message. An informational meeting will be held about the Milk Depot at Happy Bambino (2045 Atwood Ave., Madison) on Sunday, November 6th from 3:30-5:30 pm.
CPM Legislation Moves Forward
Assembly Bill 709 (The Proposal to License Certified Professional Midwives) is scheduled for a public hearing this Tuesday, October 11th at the State Capitol. Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are midwives who have completed coursework and skills training and passed a national certifying exam. They generally practice in home birth settings, but may also work in birth centers. They offer maternity services to many Wisconsin families, and are especially important to the Amish and Latino communities. The bill protects CPMs and the families they serve. The bill also allows CNMs who practice in out-of-hospital settings to qualify for licensure under the statute.
Since the bill’s introduction, there has been a groundswell of public support and there are now 20 co-sponsors. The public hearing on Tuesday is one of several, and the Wisconsin Guild of Midwives has requested families who support out-of-hospital birth ! to attend to register their support. The hearing begins at 10 am- please plan on getting to the meeting room by 9:30-9:45 am. If you’re planning on attending, please let us know (608/821-0123) so we can pass a head count on to the Guild.

Certified Professional Midwives recently were in the news with the publication of a prospective cohort study of 5,418 women planning a home birth with CPMs revealed excellent neonatal and maternal outcomes, with a cesarean section rate of 3.7% and far lower rates of medic! al intervention. All of the CPMs in Wisconsin participated in that stu dy. Read the study here.
