The Midwife Alternative
By Debra Morrill

When searching for a healthcare practitioner for yourself, don't overlook Certified Nurse-Midwives. Sure, everyone knows that midwives offer pre-natal care and deliver babies, but many don't realize the Certified Nurse-Midwives offer annual health check-ups for women throughout their lives, including pap and pelvic exams.

Aszani Kunkler, Certified Nurse-Midwife and Director of the Madison Birth Center, says, "We're very holistic. We look at weight, diet and stress levels. It's much more than a 10-15 minute exam."

Certified Nurse-Midwives also offer primary care and see patients for problems like colds, sinus infections and seasonal allergies. Most can write prescriptions, and if more help is needed, Certified Nurse-Midwives will refer their patients to a specialist. Kunkler says Certified Nurse-Midwives focus on preventative care and "look at how you're coping with your life."

In the Madison area, Certified Nurse-Midwives practice at the Madison Birth Center and at the UW Women's Health Center.
