John and I moved to Madison from Jackson, Wyoming when I was 5 and a half months pregnant. We were not sure where we would continue our prenatal care, but we were referred to Aszani and the Birth Center by a Madison-based Bradley instructor I found on the internet. After touring the Birth Center and having Aszani answer my many questions, we decided the Birth Center was where we wanted to birth our baby. We immediately felt at home at the Birth Center thanks to the warm and comfortable atmosphere of our prenatal check ups coupled with the informative and educational classes led by Aszani and Mary. Both John and I felt the classes served a dual purpose. Not only did we learn a lot about the processes of natural labor and birth, but we really got to know our midwives. We believe that the relationships we formed strengthened the trust we had in Aszani and Mary, and gave us added confidence for labor.
I went into labor a week and a half before my due date, which surprised all of us. After laboring at home for a few hours and communicating with Mary and Aszani over the phone, John and I decided it was time to head to the Birth Center. Upon arrival, Aszani beautifully facilitated our transition from home to Center so that the rhythm John and I had developed was not interrupted. While John supported me throughout labor, Aszani slipped in and out, checking my vitals and the baby’s heartbeats. She provided physical and emotional support when she knew we needed her, and she gave us our space when we were in our groove. We were so grateful for her knowledge, expertise, and her suggestions for different positions to try during labor. After laboring in the bed and the shower, I moved to the amazing tub for the final hour of labor. At 3:59 a.m. my bag of waters broke, and with the support of Aszani, Jean, and my phenomenal husband John, I birthed my son Owen Ralph into water at 4:00am. The lights were dimmed, everyone spoke in soft voices, and no one rushed. Aszani and Jean were not only respectful of John’s and my wishes--they were respectful of Owen. He was greeted with a very gentle and peaceful welcoming into this world.
