This was part of the reason why we selected the birth center for our daughter's birth. I was so afraid of hospitals that I was afraid that my labor would stop upon arrival. Since we had decided on the birth center from the beginning, it felt like home. The two times I came to the birth center while I was in labor, my labor actually sped up! The birth center was very calming for me, and I felt protected there.

This article sums up perfectly why I am choosing to have my birth at the birth center! After reading so many birth stories, and also reading things like this which explain the biological responses in mammals to their surroundings during labor, I became more and more convinced that I CAN have the natural, calming birth that I so desired with my first but did not achieve. My labor stopped, due to many environmental reasons, and wasn't budging even after natural techniques (bouncing on the birth ball, nipple stimulation, walking the halls, pelvic rocking, etc) and then the unnatural techniques (pitocin, more pitocin, MORE pitocin) until I finally accepted an epidural and fell asleep for 2 hours. I awoke, fully dilated and greeted my daughter within 45 minutes, after the "fight or flight" had been "turned off" and my "rest and digest" took over nocturnally. I'm living proof that these biological functions do stop labor, which is the biggest reason I've chosen the birth center setting over the hospital setting for my second child. This time around, I'm excited, and energized and simply can't wait! Great blog, keep them coming!

I was a little worried about how our two Boston Terriers would react to our daughter. They have been wonderful. It helps that they both knew many obedience commands before bringing our baby home. We also tried to incorporate petting them when they were around the baby in order to associate the baby with being happy...not being scolded. I am frequently nursing with one hand and petting a dog with another. Now that she is 4 1/2 months old, she has started to figure out how to pet the dogs, and I know that the three of them will be best friends!
