After the Birth
Care from your midwife continues after the birth. Your birth team stays with you to watch over you and your new baby as you transition into becoming a family. Babies go directly onto mother’s body following birth, and stay there as much as possible through the hours following birth. Madison Birth Center staff are well trained in breastfeeding and helping mom and baby start off right by offering support combined with minimal disruption and intervention. We like to see newborns self-attach at the breast within the first hour of life and will happily assist you in trying different positions as needed.
The 3 months following the birth are called the fourth trimester, and for good reason. Both family and baby are learning and growing into each other and their new roles. The first weeks in particular are a time when rest and excellent support provide a base for good health in years to come. The Madison Birth Center supports families in many ways, including visits from your birth care providers in your home around 24 and 72 hours after the birth, telephone check-ins in the first week, and office visits at 2 and 6 weeks after the birth. The midwives are available on-call by telephone throughout this time and beyond for support in breastfeeding and your health.
Home Visits
Home visits following the birth are thorough and patient. We spend time doing physical assessments of both mom and baby, observation and assistance with breastfeeding, and leave lots of time for listening. Women and families who transfer to the hospital are also encouraged to continue their care after the birth with the Madison Birth Center, including home and office visits.
